چکیده

The aim of the present paper is to elucidate some geometrically induced spectral properties for the Laplacian in L(R) perturbed by a negative multiple of the Dirac measure of an infinite curve Γ in the plane. This problem has at least two motivations. On the physics side we note that quantum mechanics of electrons confined to narrow tubelike regions has attracted a considerable interest, because such systems represent a natural model for semiconductor “quantum wires”. In some examples the region in question is a strip or tube with hard walls – see, e.g., [DE] and references therein – while other treatments assume even stronger localization to a curve

Absolute continuity in periodic thin tubes and strongly coupled leaky wires

Using a perturbative argument, we show that in any finite region containing the lowest transverse eigenmode, the spectrum of a periodically curved smooth Dirichlet tube in two or three dimensions is absolutely continuous provided the tube is sufficiently thin. In a similar way we demonstrate absolute continuity at the bottom of the spectrum for generalized Schrödinger operators with a sufficien...

Normal and shear forces generated during the ordering (directed assembly) of confined straight and curved nanowires.

The effects of shape on nanowire interactions and shear-induced ordering were studied. Both the normal and lateral forces were sensitive to the particles' curvature. (i) No adhesion was observed between the confining surfaces, and the force profiles were short-ranged and mostly reversible for straight wires but longer-ranged and irreversible for curved wires. (ii) Structural phase transitions c...

Study of leaky dielectric droplet behavior under an electric field: effect of viscosity and electric conductivity ratios

In this research, hydrodynamic behavior of a leaky dielectric droplet under an electric field is simulated. The level set method is used for interface tracking and the ghost fluid method is used for modeling discontinuous quantities at interface. Using Taylor’s leaky dielectric model, electric field and electric force at the interface is calculated. Simulation results show the droplet deformati...

Curved planar quantum wires with Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions

The spectral properties of curved quantum wires with Dirichlet boundary condition were widely investigated (e.g. [1], [2], [3]). It was shown that any small curvature of the tube in dimensions 2 and 3 produces at least one positive eigenvalue below the essential spectrum threshold. The problem of the existence of such eigenvalues in the straight quantum waveguides with a combination of Dirichle...

Bound States in Curved Quantum Layers

We consider a nonrelativistic quantum particle constrained to a curved layer of constant width built over a non-compact surface embedded in R. We suppose that the latter is endowed with the geodesic polar coordinates and that the layer has the hard-wall boundary. Under the assumption that the surface curvatures vanish at infinity we find sufficient conditions which guarantee the existence of ge...
